Binance Coin (BNB) was created by the international crypto-exchange, Binance. $15 million was raised for BNB in July 2017 via an initial coin offering (ICO).
Initially BNB was an ERC-20 token but has since migrated over to its own blockchain. BNB is sent and received over its own native blockchain known as Binance chain. Binance chain was created with the exclusive purpose of supporting Binance’s plans for operating a decentralized exchange.
BNB is used for accessing cheaper trading fees on Binance’s legacy exchange platform, issuing digital assets on Binance chain, creating trading pairs between two different digital assets issued on Binance chain, and can be used to pay trading fees on the Binance decentralized exchange (DEX).
BNB also acts as pseudo-equity due to Binance’s quarterly coin burns funded by the cash flows from its centralized exchange. The coin burns reduce the supply of BNB available in the market which, in theory, gives holders the chance to earn some capital appreciation.
The Binance team leveraged some of the tools already built by other projects in the space. Binance uses the Cosmos SDK which is an open source toolkit built for developers looking to create single purpose blockchains. The Cosmos SDK includes the Tendermint consensus engine which Binance chain uses for its consensus mechanism. Tendermint is seen as a high quality Proof of Stake algorithm by many practitioners and theorists.
The BNB network involves three types of nodes: validator nodes, special community members who vote iteratively to validate the same agreed upon transaction history; witness nodes, which monitor the consensus process and broadcast transactions to other nodes; and accelerator nodes, which are owned by organizations and speed up the transaction validation process for users who are willing to pay extra.
